WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

English/Language Arts

In ELA, we are focusing on capitalization and punctuation! We have learned that a period does not always go at the end of the sentence! Sometimes we use question marks or exclamation points! Please help your child edit their sentences at home!

We have been working on common and proper nouns. Nouns are people, places, things, or animals. Common nouns are everyday nonspecific nouns like boy, girl, park, pencil, or bear. Proper nouns are specific nouns that must be capitalized such as Ms. High, McDonald's, or Toyota.

We have discussed singular and plural nouns. Plural means more than  one (dogs, books, kites). Singular nouns are just one (dog, book, kite).

We have also learned about verbs (action words) and adjectives (describing words).

Recently, we learned about possessive nouns (the girl's balloon, the boy's bat) and how they show ownership! We also learned about the shades of meaning in verbs (jog, run, sprint) and adjectives (cool, cold, freezing). Lastly, we learned about articles (a, an, the) and demonstratives (these, that, this).

Phonics/Reading

In Phonics, we began with short vowel sounds (A, E, I, O, U). Short vowel sounds say their sound! Now we're finished with long vowel sounds. Long vowels say their name!

We also learned all of the blends (for example: bl, pl, cr, pr, and more!)

In Reading, we are also working hard to memorize our sight words! There are many fun ways to practice at home! We are also focused on determining fiction books from nonfiction books. We know that fiction books have illustrations and can be make believe. Nonfiction books usually have photographs and always give us information!

Math

In Math, we are finishing up with graphing data. Be sure to look for different types of graphs (bar graphs, line graphs, and pie graphs)! Continue practicing tally marks!

We have also finished up with ten more, ten less, and one more, one less and place value.

We also learning about word problems. There are many great sites to practice these fun facts! Feel free to email me for some! :)

We completed geometry with shapes and fractions!

We have also learned about time, measurement, and how to add and subtract two digit numbers!

Science and Social Studies

In Science, we learned about plants and animals. We discussed the needs of plants and animals. We made diagrams of flowers and the life cycle of a butterfly.

We also discussed that some animals are producers (meaning they produce or make their own food) while other animals are consumers (meaning they consume or eat other plants and animals).

In Science, we just finished our magnets unit (and we learned a LOT!). Now we are moving on to light, shadows, and sound.

In Social Studies, we began the year mapping our world. We have discussed our city, county, state, country, continent, and planet. We've been looking at the seven continents, the five oceans, and major landforms.
